A Painting a Day - Day 33 - Dogwood (?) blossom

Friday's painting a day - Day 33 - watercolor and graphite
My friend Leah gave me a couple of branches from a tree in her garden. I can't remember what she said it was and I was thinking it was a dogwood - but when I searched for it, I'm not sure that's right. This is a big blow-up of a tiny white flower, growing in clusters on the branches, with the tiniest little green leaves nestled inside. You'd think with all the flowers I've drawn and painted through the years I'd know what all the different parts of the flower are, but sadly, I do not.

At any rate, I had fun doing this and I kind of like the way the leaves curl around, leading your eye around and through the little painting. I love adding all the other colors and still having it read as a white flower too. Fun!

Even with our early spring, it is much to early for dogwoods. And dogwoods only have 4 "bracts" (petals), which usually have a burned-looking spot on the edges.

Lovely painting!

Thanks JoAnn. That's what I thought. I'm hoping someone knows what this is!
