Milford's Annual Bug and Bud Festival

On Saturday, April 24, Downtown Milford, Inc. held its 7th Annual Bug and Bud Festival, celebrating both Arbor Day and the anniversary of the Lady Bug becoming the state bug of Delaware through the efforts of a Milford 2nd grade class in 1974 and a dedicated teacher at Lulu Ross Elementary School. Milford has been designated a "Tree City" and every year at this festival the city gives away seedlings for folks to plant in their yards to increase the number of trees in our city. The festival has grown bigger each year and this one was the best yet! Downtown is closed to traffic and vendors line the streets. There is something for everyone, lots of fun activities for kids, ladybug paddle boats on the river and music entertainment throughout the day. It culminated with a fantastic jazz concert at the end of the day and was even attended by the First Lady of the State of Delaware, Carla Markell. We got to show off our city, the new branding program, the art league, Angelucci's gallery and the shops and restaurants in our downtown.

A Ladybug Parade kicks off the festival led by Ladybug Shop owners Dan and Rhonda Bond and their grandkids walking with our former Mayor Dan Marabello

And the band played on!

Kids dress up in tree or ladybug costumes and what a great job they all did!

This was pretty creative!

Kyla turns 6

Kyla turned 6 April 27. She had a fancy "Diva" party at a kids hair salon in Richmond with all her best friends, sisters and cousins. AND a sleep-over! She had a great time. We spent Sunday with her and celebrated her birthday again. Here's a little of what we did. She is such a joy!

I made the cake (her favorite flavor - chocolate with pink icing) and she finished off the decorations!

6 Candles! I can't believe how big she's gotten - she even got her ears pierced for her birthday!

There is no wonder why Kyla says "You're Silly Gampy!"

Reading with Gram - a visit to the bookstore is a fun way to spend some time!

Recently we told you that we were going to be part of a show of Italian-made fine arts and fine crafts in Los Gatos, California at the Los Gatos Company - I received this email flyer today and wanted to share it with you. Isn't this cool? The exhibit opens this weekend with a reception on Saturday, April 24, 4-8pm.

Mispillion Art League's New Website is Live!

I am very excited to tell you that the Mispillion Art League's new website design is up and running! This was a collaborative effort. I designed the overall "look" and Scott Livingood, of Computer America, web designer here in Milford, did the production. I'm so excited at the way it turned out and wanted to be sure to let you know so you can check out all the wonderful things the league is involved in!

The Forsythia in Dolce's Window

I did this little watercolor sketch a while ago, in my journal and seeing the basket reappear in the window of Dolce Bakery after the wintery window went away, made me think of it. So I decided in honor of this glorious spring, that I would post it here.

Made in Italy

Bob and I are excited to tell you we will be part of an exhibit at The Los Gatos Company and Gallery, 17 1/2 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, CA 95030, T. (408) 354-2433, organized by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade. Products from 70 emerging Italian companies will be presented in top stores in 18 states across the nation!

In addition to the Los Gatos Company in California, some of the other stores selected for this promotion are "Nest" in Dallas, Texas, "Poggi Bonsi" in Burien Washington, "A Mano" in Washington, DC, "24e Style" in Savannah, Georgia, "Bell'Arte" in Scarsdale, New York, and Trouvé in Phoenix. Arizona. Their store is the only one in the Bay area taking part in this promotion.

The show "Made in Italy" will be on display from April 23 to May 6th with a reception on Saturday, April 24 from 4-8pm. Bob's framed photographs and my journal paintings were "Made in Italy" while we lived there. My cousins Andrew and Marnie Bivetto own this delightful shop right in the heart of Los Gatos and we were thrilled that they asked us to take part in this show and sale of all things Italian. We were excited to see our friend Sylvia's company "Re.Leg.Art" included in the list of emerging companies. We met her in Perugia and I even had a lesson in making books by hand at her shop where everything is done with precision and care, with soft leathers, by hand, each one a piece of art. There are several ceramics companies from Deruta, bronze statues and many, many more.

Visit the website www.italiangiftware.com for more information. If you are in the Bay area, please plan on stopping in to the Los Gatos Company to see all the beautiful work "Made in Italy" that will be on display during this special promotion.

Here are two of our images that will be included in the show. Both my original watercolor and Bob's archival photograph depict a blue door and window in Cetara, a small town along the Amalfi Coast.

My Easter Basket

I'm such a big kid, I had to color some eggs. Nothing fancy this year - I just boiled 6 eggs (two of them cracked!) and used blue and green food coloring - they turned out sort of monotone but the surprising thing was the designs that appeared - are not of my doing! I rinsed the eggs before I put them in the dye but I'm thinking the chickens got creative with these eggs and put their own markings ("chicken scratches"??) on them! I've never seen anything like this, have you?

Good Friday

Little Nun, Good Friday, Enna

ItalianNotebook.com today has a "note" about Good Friday in the far west Sicilian town of Trapani. It was contributed by Janice Robinson, a painter, currently renovating a house in Sardegna. I wanted to share it since it has some terrific photos of the festival and an explanation of the procession, where men from the town carry not only one statue, but a grouping of statues of the 14 stations of the cross on floats covered with flowers - all night long throughout the streets of the town. When we were in Sicily we saw the Good Friday processions in Enna, in itself a long drive from where we lived in Marina di Ragusa on the south east coast of the island but well worth the trip. Here are links to our photos and stories of that day and a wish that this Easter season brings you joy and peace. Enna, Good Friday and Good Friday in Enna 4.14.06
