Downtown Milford Holiday Stroll 2012

Me, in my studio, with my "paintings a day," NoteCards & more

Haven't had a chance to post photos from this year's Downtown Milford Holiday Stroll. It was so much fun, as always with the streets closed to traffic, the downtown decked out festively, shops open, offering hot cocoa, wine and cookies, carolers dressed in Victorian clothes and generally great holiday cheer!

Heavy rain put an early end to the festivities but it was still fun.

If you didn't make it, put it on your calendar for next year. It's one of my favorite events of the year and takes place on the first Friday of December.

For more information about upcoming downtown events, visit Downtown Milford Inc. And do come downtown before all the beautiful decorations come down!

Beth Gilbert of Beth's Whimsicality - handmade jewelry

Betsy Rybczynski of StudiO-K, prints and paintings

Our downtown starting to fill up - horse & carriage going past

Joan Mulholland, The Pearl Lady, custom designed freshwater pearls

Nutcracker Ballet dancers stopped by!

"Painting a Day" paintings hung up like Christmas stockings!

We offered wine and hot cider, cookies and more!

Paul Jones, Paul Jones Studio, oil paintings

Bob's photograph on display in the studio

The "painting a day" paintings were placed on the shelves

The front room of the The Studios Upstairs was very festive!

Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

As you can see from this photo, we did not suffer much damage from Hurricane Sandy. Lots of rain and wind but the hurricane turned north of us and we, and our little town of Milford, Delaware were spared.

Not so fortunate were folks living in New York and New Jersey who really got the brunt of it.

St. Bart's Church photo - from their website
We've tried to help by adding our donations to those of our neighbors who brought a truck-load of coats, blankets, hats etc in those early days right after the storm.

I thought I'd tell you about one of the things my brother is doing and share it with you. I am not affiliated with St. Bart's Church in NYC, but my brother is a member. Since his semi-retirement he has also become quite a good amateur photographer. I'm really impressed with what he has been doing - he has a great eye for composition and has made some truly remarkable images. He has always been a meticulous and detail oriented person, so it was natural I suppose that after a stellar career in media and technology consulting that he would be good at whatever he put his mind too.

Well, he approached St. Bart's with the idea of putting together a calendar of photographs of this gem of Byzantine art and architecture as a fundraiser for the church. 50% of all proceeds will go towards helping victims of Hurricane Sandy. The calendar includes photographs by my brother and I believe 3 other photographers/members of St. Bart's. The beautiful calendar he designed is now available for $17 + shipping and handling - Click here for more information.

New! Waterlily Notecards

I had such a wonderful time at Longwood Gardens one day this past year when the waterlilies were blooming. So many colors! So many different varieties. And it was an overcast day so even the night bloomers were open! I snapped many photos and had a great time.

I then used these photos as reference for my "Painting a Day" paintings.

And now I've created a new assortment of NoteCards - reproductions of these original watercolors - (hint: perfect for gift giving - think Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Teacher, Friend...or Yourself!) Each assortment contains one each, with a different one on top, just for variety! (FYI, the originals - unmatted, unframed - are $145, 4-card sets $12.50 + S+H)

Hope you like them! I will have them all for sale the night of the Holiday Stroll and on our website.

Watercolor Journal from San Francisco

I enjoyed myself journaling in and around the San Francisco area. Here is a slide show of some of the pages from my  journal.

If you want to see more of my watercolor journals search "watercolor journaling" at the top left of the page. And if you would like to learn more about my workshops, please contact me at rosemary@livecheapmakeart.com

Watercolor Journaling Workshop in Los Gatos, California

We traveled to San Francisco and Los Gatos, California recently to teach a workshop there and visit with my family who live in the Santa Cruz Mountains. My cousins own and operate The Los Gatos Company in the heart of downtown Los Gatos, a charming town just south of San Francisco halfway between Santa Cruz and San Jose. I was delighted with the response and even more delighted to have one of my old friends from Phoenix, now living in the area, attend the workshop, as well as one of my e-newsletter subscribers who found us through italiannotebook.com! I even had a few accomplished artists (albeit not in watercolors) attend and based on their responses, everyone seemed to enjoy the workshop and asked when I would do it again!

The weather was unseasonably warm for our two-day workshop but there are plenty of shady spots on their lovely property that includes a wisteria covered pergola, swimming pool and lots of huge old trees. Here are some photos from the workshop.

If you are reading this and would like to have me come do a workshop for you and your friends, please contact me and we'll try to work something out. I love to travel and meet new people and if I can do that while teaching a class -- how great is that!

Thanks to those who attended and to Marnie & Andy for hosting! It was great being with all of you!

This photo and the next few show how different each person's drawings of the same subject can be. The watering can on the table served as "still life" for one of our exercises. Each person drew it from a different perspective - each drawing is as unique as the artist who carefully observed and captured it on paper.

Ocean City, Maryland Get-Away

Bob Bob and I spent a few days in Ocean City this past week, staying in the apartment of a friend there. We had a lovely, truly relaxing time. I will post more photos later when we've had a chance to download and see what we got, but here are some of the journal page I did there.

Iconic Ocean City, with the Amusement Park and Ferris Wheel and Roller Coaster

It struck me funny how most of the people were  all clustered in the center!

We were a short walk from this Bay where I sketched this scene

Not where we stayed, but within our sights as we relaxed on the beach
