On Sunday, February 5, 2012 Maria Sadler and I held this workshop at her pottery studio in Milford, Delaware. Maria had hot coffee and fresh baked goodies waiting for us on this chilly morning in her cozy studio. Our students were excited to learn something new as none had worked in clay before (except maybe in high school). Maria has a very gentle teaching style that made all of us (I tried it too) feel comfortable and we found working with the clay extremely soothing and relaxing. She showed us how to roll the clay and cut it out with all the various tools and forms she had available in the studio and how to use the forms to imprint the clay with patterns and designs. What fun!!
I plan to go help her glaze the pieces (some of our attendees will return to do their own pieces) and she will fire them in her kiln when they're ready and let everyone know when the finished pieces are done.
Lunch was prepared by the gifted chefs at Abbott's Grill and once again they went out of their way: Beef and Barley soup and a Grilled Vegetable Panini with a side of Bowtie Pasta Salad, finished off with a Chocolate Chip Cookie!
The afternoon, we turned our attention to Watercolor Journaling - starting with a lesson and a demo and a chance to sketch and paint in their journals for the rest of the afternoon, while I went around offering help one-on-one, using Maria's tools and lovely pottery filling the shelves that had inspired us earlier.
All in all it was a delightful day spent in the company of enthusiastic and creative people. I'm grateful to have had the experience and hope they are too!
Maria Sadler is presenting a 3 day workshop at Mispillion Art League starting Sunday Feb 12 from 1-4pm. To register, call Judy Struck, Education Chair at 424-8361.
