Shakespeare in the Park - Rehoboth Art League

Oberon & Puck gloat over Titania's new-found Love, Bottom

Possum Point Players put on a production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on the grounds of the Rehoboth Art League on Saturday, June 2 and Bob and I attended, much to our delight. The setting couldn't have been more perfect -  with the grape arbor that leads to the formal garden behind The Homestead providing an idyllic backdrop, as trees rustled overhead and birds flew in and out, providing a chorus of birdsong.

Mortals watching the Play within a Play
The minimal sets and flowing costumes were as airy and fairytale like as was called for - a very brave and daring Oberon (Richard Huffman) showing more skin than one would expect from a gentleman his age, but he carried it off with aplomb! Titania (Sharon George) was lovely and graceful, the fairies charming, lovers sweet and charming. Puck (Skye Harrell) was a creative interpretation: mischievous, sexy and naive all as the scene required. I just wish she had been better able to punch her lines out to the audience - especially at the end when Puck delivers the final words to the play.

Titania, Queen of the Fairies and Bottom (as a Mule)
Of all the players, Bottom's booming voice (Michael Keene) was the only one that could be heard consistently, all the way at the back of the audience where we ended up standing through the second act.

The wind kicked up at one point, with storm clouds hovering, but soon blew away and clear skies prevailed.

This was the first of 3 performances for the summer - this play will be performed again on July 7 and August 4th. We love live theatre and are always forgiving especially with amateur actors, as many were, acting their hearts out! I just hope that they work on projecting their voices out into the audience a bit more. Shakespeare is often difficult to follow under the best sound conditions, but outdoors, it must be especially challenging.

Titania sleeps
All in all for $10 a ticket it's a bargain and a delightful way to spend a summer evening! We hope to attend future performances by this talented bunch and hope you will too.

I saw the show too, and thought the cast and director did an excellent job. Skye Harrell is clearly talented, but you are right that in trying to give her voice a certain, deep booming quality she lost some projection.
