Happy New Year everyone!

“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.” (Irish proverb)

The "Life" Section of the November 25, 2011 issue of the News Journal featured the art and life of Rosemary & Bob - their time in Italy, life in Milford and Rosemary's watercolor journaling classes and workshops.

The January 2009 issue of Wavelength the member magazine for KJZZ, the National Public Radio station in Phoenix, Arizona includes an article written by Rosemary about our travels in Italy with reproductions of our photos and paintings. You can read it online by going to: Issuu.com

We're excited to tell you that the front page of the "Life" Section of Sunday's News Journal contained an article about Bob and I - our art and our life. Gary Soulsman interviewed us a few weeks ago, after we met him at an Art League event and he became interested in the story of how we lived in Italy, our philosophy, to "live cheap and make art" and my watercolor journals and workshops.

It's a lovely article we're very proud of and especially the lead in, where he says: "As a motto, "live cheap and make art" sounds like a denial of the good things while sacrificing to create something beautiful. But Bob and Rosemary Connelly, a Milford photographer and watercolorist who espouse this motto, are a husband and wife who don't seem to be suffering at all. For them, "live cheap and make art" is simply prizing experience over stuff." Couldn't have said it any better myself! Thanks Gary!

Gary is the religion, arts and general features reporter with The News Journal and Delawareonline.com. Photographer Gary Emeigh came to Milford to shoot us in the downtown and in my studio in the Riverwalk Center for the Arts, above the Mispillion Art League and Angelucci Studios and Artists Gallery.

Yoga and Watercolor Journaling Workshop

This past Sunday Gwen and I presented our 2nd Yoga and Watercolor Journaling Workshops. We had nine attendees who met in the morning at Causey Mansion and after our usual introductions, we went outside for a yoga session. I am sorry to tell you that I got so caught up in doing the yoga, stretching, breathing and bending along with the group led so skillfully by Gwen that I melted into a relaxed mush and forgot to take photos of her session! She however, did a great job of shooting these photos of the watercolor journaling portion. So, you will just have to imagine a breezy, cool morning in the rear garden of this historic mansion, green hedges behind, towering, ancient trees in all their fall glory, eyes closed, listening to Gwen lead us into a very relaxed state, ready to move inside and begin our journey into watercolor journaling.

Something new! Italy Portfolios!

I created these little Italy Portfolios as a gift item for the holidays. Each handmade "portfolio" contains 10 giclee prints, reproduced from my watercolor journals of Tuscany and Umbria - sized to fit in a 5x7 frame, to put in a standard 5x7 envelope or simply to keep and enjoy. If you have visited these places, perhaps they will bring back memories of your own time spent in Bella Italia. Gift tags are hand-painted original watercolors.

They sell for $30 each and can be ordered by emailing me at rosemary@livecheapmakeart.com.

Vermont in Fall

We had the extreme pleasure of spending several days in Vermont at the home of our friend April's sister Pam and her family. We'll be posting more photos (and you know there are plenty!) soon, but I just wanted to throw this little teaser out there. Suffice to say, the fall colors were anything but "muted"!

Watercolor Journaling Workshop, Decatur, Illinois

The Watercolor Journaling Workshop I taught in Decatur in conjunction with our joint exhibit at Anne Lloyd Gallery in the Madden Center was a hit! Thirteen people attended the one-day class held at the Rock Springs Nature Center, organized by the Decatur Area Arts Council.

We started out indoors for lessons and exercises before heading outdoors to journal. Everyone had a great time. The location is amazing with many subject to focus attention on and many said they would continue journaling and would go back to that location with their artist friends to sketch and journal. How rewarding for me, to spread this joyful activity in other places far away from home!

Tomorrow we head to Vermont for a little vacation and to enjoy the fall colors. While I'm there, I will present a watercolor journaling workshop at Cosmic Bakery and Cafe - owned by Pam McCarthy who is our friend April's sister. Pam is opening her home to Bob and I and we are grateful for her generous hospitality. Can't wait!!

Our Joint Exhibit in Decatur

Our joint exhibit "Travel Art: Italy and Beyond" opened at the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Madden Center in downtown Decatur, Illinois on September 2, 2011 to a very good response! The local paper ran a few "teasers" in the days leading up to the Opening and then a really nice article all about us and our work, the day of. Sue Powell, director of the gallery and her crew did an amazing job of organizing and hanging the show. Refreshments were all Italian-inspired and a musician played the piano in the large exhibit space.

A very enthusiastic crowd attended and listened intently as we talked about our travel experiences and our work. All in all, it was a great night! All work is for sale and will remain up until the 29th of Septmeber when we will return to help take it down. There are already enough people signed up for the Watercolor Journaling Workshop on October 1 for it to "go" so I am now looking forward to that, which will take place at the Rock Springs Nature Center near downtown Decatur.
